For Carmel and her family of four in Raglan, going gluten-free started with a coeliac diagnosis and a search for food the whole family could enjoy. After giving up on gluten-free bread altogether, discovering Lucy’s changed things. We sat down with the family to learn about their journey.
Starting the gluten-free journey
“I was diagnosed with coeliac disease when I was 36. Because of that, we decided to test everyone else in the family, and it came back positive for Aspen and myself. That was really the start of our gluten-free journey.”
For Carmel and her family, going gluten-free meant finding foods that everyone could enjoy, without compromising on taste or the simple things they loved.
Finding bread the kids actually loved
“Before Lucy’s, gluten-free bread was pretty average. We’d tried it a couple of times and eventually just gave up on bread.”
That changed when Harper first came across Lucy’s at daycare.
“Aspen absolutely loved Lucy’s as soon as he found it. Interestingly, it was Harper who first came across it at daycare. He absolutely loved it too, and we found it was great for things like sausage sizzles. Now, everyone in the family eats it.”
For Aspen, 10, it was the texture that made Lucy’s different.
“It didn’t crack, it was good for sausage sizzles and it’s nice and soft.”
Something for everyone
The best part? Everyone in the family has their favourite.
“I like the Fruity Bread toasted with butter and jam.”
Harper, 8
“I like the White Bread just plain out of the packet.”
Aspen, 10
“I like the Burger Buns.”
Carmel
“I like the Olive & Thyme. It’s super good toasted.”
Tom
Different favourites, but one thing in common: everyone can enjoy the same bread.
Making shared food easier
For Carmel, having a bread the whole family can enjoy makes shared meals and social occasions a little easier too.
“There’s no risk of cross-contamination when we’re out. If we’re somewhere with shared food, we can put Lucy’s on the table and other people want to eat it too.”
“It’s easy, it tastes good and the whole family enjoys it. Even when people come around, if we only have Lucy’s bread, they’re happy to eat it too.”
Tom
From giving up on gluten-free bread altogether to finding a loaf everyone reaches for, Lucy’s has become part of everyday life for Carmel, Tom, Aspen and Harper in Raglan.
